

Every summer, our neighbors Gail and Atan wait for the high sign from Fix Brothers Fruit Farm in Hudson, New York. When the farm’s newsletter announces the beginning of pickyour- own sour cherry season, they plan their annual pilgrimage. This is no casual summer outing. It is a blood sport. The season for sour cherries is short (usually a couple of weeks in early July), the fruit is precious, and the competition is fierce. Unlike sweet cherries, sour cherries are typically too tart for snacking, but because they’re softer and give up their juices profusely, they’re an excellent choice for pies, clafoutis, and cobblers.
